waffles for two

I found this amazing pancake recipe in The Joy of Cooking, which just happens to make exactly two very large delicious waffles, plus a small ‘dog waffle’ for the puppy. Now, I’ve finished both waffles, they’re gone. . .but something bothers me: who was that other waffle for? Who could have been blessed if I had just invited them to breakfast?

The other day I ran into Silverton to get KFC for my parents for dinner (our stove was on the fritz, or I would have just cooked). I ordered two value meals, since that’s the easiest way to get the right amount of chicken and just enough side dishes for comfort without paying too much for it all (thus the name, value meal). Unfortunately, to America the word MEAL entails a HUGE soda along with it, much more than is healthy for consumption by one person. And having ordered two value meals, I now had in my possession two said sodas. So, on my way out of the parking lot, I offered one to a man I saw rifling through the trash. . .and he very rudely said no. ‘But,’ I thought, ‘I have too much. . .take some!’

Friends, we live in a culture of excess. And the people who need all this extra we have floating around are either absent or too disgusted with our immoderation to accept help when it’s offered. If our hands are always so full, why aren’t we able to give more away? In my house we have cupboards full of blankets, forgotten closets full of clothes my family and I will never wear again. Where is the limit, and when did it become OK to surpass it? How long ago did we leave those who need our generosity behind to fend for themselves so that we could buy a bigger TV?

There are organizations out there that sucessfully locate and aid those who need it the most. . .and you don't always have to make a year'scommittment. If you're not giving to your church on a regular basis, tithe for this.
